Wahoo's Swim Lessons Program

We offer swim lessons for children ages 4 to 16. Our lessons are on Sundays in Budenheim from 12pm to 3pm.

Classes are 25 or 45 min in length. We offer beginner through advanced levels and pre-team level for those wanting to join our competitive swim team, but who may need to build endurance and enhance stroke technique.

Our Instructors

We offer two levels of instructor. Junior instructors are high school students and senior instructors are adults. All instructors have met the same requirements to be a Wahoo's swim instructor.

Junior Instructor (JI)...............................$20 / 30-minute lesson

Senior Instructor (SI)..............................$35 / 30-minute lesson

$7 pool fee included in lesson fee


 

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT SUMMER PRIVATE LESSONS

 

Limited spots available! Spots fill up fast. Once filled, additional spots will not be added.

Each private lesson is 30 minutes.

All students must be 4 years or older.

Your student does not need to be in a specific group or at a specific level to benefit from summer private lessons.

If you would like to add a sibling to a lesson you have registered for, it will be an additional $10 per lesson. Please email us for more information on registering the additional sibling. Only two siblings are allowed per lesson and must have similar skill abilities. 

 

 ​Please register with the same instructor as often as possible. This ensures your student is provided continual skill progression. We understand that some instructors may not be available certain weeks as they will be enjoying their summer vacation.

Program Objectives: 

 

Level 2:

Level 2 swimmers will continue to integrate safe swim guidelines and continue to practice beginning swimming skills and building confidence in swimming safely. To graduate to Level 3, swimmers will show proficiency in the following skills:

Identify at least three (3) Safety rules

- Never swim alone
- Always swim with an adult
- If you are tired, float on your back
- Call 112 for an emergency
- Tell an adult if someone is in the water
- If you fall in, shout for help really loud and float on your back
- If you see someone fall in, do not go into the water to save them. Throw a flotation device, tell an adult, and call for help

Breath Hold

Hold breath underwater for 3-5 seconds with mouth closed
Do not plug nose with hand

Bubbles

Blow bubbles through nose with humming sound for 3-5 seconds

Jump and return to wall

Jump from side of pool to 2-3 feet away from wall

Rest position

Float on back for 15 seconds unassisted in rest/starfish position

Flutter kick-sitting on wall

Assisted flutter kick movement while sitting on wall

Flutter kick with kickboard

10 meters unassisted flutter kick with legs at surface of the water
 

Beginner front crawl

Front crawl with “scoops”
Minimal help from instructor, can be done with a pool noodle around chest or barrel hold from instructor

Front crawl to Rest position

Rotate from front crawl position to rest/starfish position (floating on back) with minimal assistance

Toy grab

Submerge from sitting position on wall or jump in, blow bubbles, grab toy from 3 ft (bottom), and return to surface

Beginner breaststroke (frog) kick

knees toward chest (chicken),
feet outward position (airplane),
whip around, feet together (soldier)

Level 3:

 

Level 3 swimmers will demonstrate all previous level competencies, continue to demonstrate knowledge of safe swimming, and will advance to swimming short distances unassisted and building confidence in deeper water levels. To graduate to Level 4, swimmers will show proficiency in the following skills:

Identify at least five (5) safety rules

- Never swim alone
- Always swim with an adult
- If you are tired, float on your back
- Call 112 for an emergency
- Tell an adult if someone is in the water
- If you fall in, shout for help really loud and float on your back
- If you see someone fall in, do not go into the water to save them. Throw a flotation device, tell an adult, and call for help

Floating

Float on back for 30 seconds unassisted in rest/starfish position

Flutter kick with board

10-15 meters unassisted while keeping legs straight and at the surface

Flutter kick on back

Superman pose breaths on wall

Hold onto wall with both hands, flutter kick with legs straight behind.
Blow bubbles while looking down, focus on breathing ONLY to sides
5-10 Consecutive breaths

On wall in superman position and/or with kickboard
knees toward chest (chicken) feet outward position (airplane) whip around, feet together (soldier)

Beginner Breaststroke

Knees toward chest (chicken) feet outward position (airplane) whip around, feet together (soldier)
Arms : Streamline (arrow), pull (inward and around), push (back to streamline)
Glide: glide for 3-5 seconds
*Each element must be present, does not need to be coordinated, may be assisted

Sitting dive

Begin diving from the side of the pool from sitting position, arms in streamline, push off wall, glide 2-3 meters

 


Level 4:

Level 4 swimmers will demonstrate all previous level competencies, continue to build, and demonstrate knowledge of safe swimming and will swim up to 20 meters unassisted in deeper water, building confidence and endurance. To graduate to Level 5, swimmers will show proficiency in the following skills:

Identify All Safety Rules

- Never swim alone
- Always swim with an adult
- If you are tired, float on your back
- Call 112 for an emergency
- Tell an adult if someone is in the water
- If you fall in, shout for help really loud and float on your back
- If you see someone fall in, do not go into the water to save them. Throw a flotation device, tell an adult, and call for help

Freestyle flutter kick, unassisted

Develop a strong freestyle flutter kick, utilizing the entire leg, feet below the water unassisted for 20 meters

Back flutter kick

Develop a strong backstroke flutter kick, utilizing the entire leg, feet below the water, unassisted for 20 meters

Tread Water

Tread water with hand and arm sculling with bicycle kick legs and rhythmic above water breathing for 30-60 seconds unassisted, instructor in arms reach.

Rotary Breathing

Demonstrate freestyle rotary breathing, with chin to chest/ear to arm, with mild assistance (not with kick) for 30-60 seconds

Complete freestyle

Demonstrate freestyle kick, pull, and breathing for 15 meters unassisted

Complete Breaststroke

Develop and demonstrate breaststroke pull, kick, and breathing for 15-20 meters, unassisted

Sitting Dive

Develop diving progression, dive in sitting position from wall unassisted.

Kneeling Dive

Begin diving from side of pool in a kneeling position.

Object Retrieval

Develop in water diving, retrieving objects from 1-2 meters in depth.

Elementary Backstroke

Combine arms (chicken, airplane, soldier), with legs (bend at knees, feet out and around, return to streamline), with rhythmic breathing, 20 meters unassisted.

Side Stroke

Introduce the arm pull, and leg whip kick, combined, 10 meters unassisted

 


Level 5:

Level 5 swimmers will demonstrate all previous level competencies, continue to build, and demonstrate knowledge of safe swimming and will swim 25 meters unassisted in deeper water, building confidence and endurance. To graduate to PreTeam, swimmers will show proficiency in the following skills:

Identify All Safety Rules

 

- Never swim alone
- Always swim with an adult
- If you are tired, float on your back
- Call 112 for an emergency
- Tell an adult if someone is in the water
- If you fall in, shout for help really loud and float on your back
- If you see someone fall in, do not go into the water to save them. Throw a flotation device, tell an adult, and call for help

Breaststroke

Develop and demonstrate breaststroke kick, pull, glide, and breathing pattern, 25 meters unassisted

Backstroke

Develop and demonstrate backstroke kick, shoulder rotation with proper arm stroke and rhythmic breathing, 25 meters unassisted

Freestyle

Develop and demonstrate freestyle proper arm stroke and breathing pattern, with flutter kick, 25 meters unassisted

Elementary Backstroke

Demonstrate elementary backstroke, with proper arm stroke and breaststroke kick 25 meters unassisted

Streamline on front 15 Meters

Demonstrate streamline positioning on front and back with flutter kick, 15 meters unassisted

Seated Dive

Demonstrate seated dive

Kneeling Dive

Demonstrate kneeling dive

Deep Diving

Develop in water diving, utilizing a pike dive, retrieving object from 3 meters in depth

Treading Water

Tread water with hand and arm sculling alternating bicycle kick legs and eggbeater legs, include rhythmic above water breathing for 60 seconds unassisted, instructor in arms reach.

Beginning Dolphin Kick

Butterfly stroke pull

Introduction to butterfly stroke pull

Sidestroke

Introduction to sidestroke, working on whip kick and arm pull movements. Swim at least 20 meters unassisted.

 


PreTeam:

Pre-team swimmers have mastered all previous levels and are ready to develop the four (4) strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly, and skills, dives, starts and flip turns, that are required for the swim team. To graduate, swimmers will show proficiency in the following skills:

Identify All Safety Rules

 

- Never swim alone

- Always swim with an adult

- If you are tired, float on your back

- Call 112 for an emergency

- Tell an adult if someone is in the water

- If you fall in, shout for help really loud and float on your back

Endurance, 50 meters, Freestyle

 

Demonstrate increased endurance in freestyle, comfortably swimming 50m without breaks

 

Endurance, 50 Meters, Backstroke

 

Demonstrate increased endurance in backstroke, comfortably swimming 50m without breaks

 

Endurance, 50 meters, Breaststroke

Demonstrate increased endurance in breaststroke strokes, comfortably swimming 50m without breaks

Endurance, 25 meters, Butterfly

Demonstrate increased endurance in butterfly, comfortably swimming 25m without breaks

Breaststroke

 

Develop coordination of breaststroke, further refining the arm pull, breathing pattern, breaststroke kick, and glide

Backstroke

Develop coordination of backstroke, further refining the arm and shoulder rotation, flutter kick, and rhythmic breathing

Freestyle

Develop coordination of freestyle, further refining the arm length, pull and rotary breathing

Butterfly

Develop coordination of butterfly, further developing and refining the simultaneous arm pull rotation, breathing, and butterfly (dolphin) kick

Deep Water Dive

Demonstrate deep water dives; diving from side of the pool, swim to the middle of the deep end, dive 3 meters with pike dive, retrieve object

Tread Water

Tread water with hand and arm sculling alternating bicycle kick legs and eggbeater legs, include rhythmic above water breathing for 60 seconds unassisted

Weighted Water Tread

Tread water with alternating kicks, including rhythmic above water breathing, while holding 5-pound weighted block overhead, instructor in arms reach.
